Do you need a GOV.UK One Login to register as a landlord?

Last checked 17 Oct 2026. The regulations were still in draft when we checked, so details can change.

The GOV.UK Housing Hub tells landlords to get a GOV.UK One Login, because you need one to use the Register your rental property service.

What it is

GOV.UK One Login is the government's sign-in for online services. If you have already used it for another government service, you may have an account. We have not seen any guidance saying an existing account will not work.

What to do before 15 December 2026

  1. Check whether you already have a GOV.UK One Login.
  2. If not, set one up through the official GOV.UK sign-in page, not through a third party.
  3. Keep the email address and sign-in method somewhere safe.
  4. Decide who in a joint ownership will be the person who signs in. See joint landlords and companies.

Letting agents

The Housing Hub says that if you use a letting agent, you still start the registration yourself, although your agent may be able to upload some information. See letting agents and the register.

Beware of look-alike sites

The only place to register is the official GOV.UK service. Anyone asking you to pay to "secure your place", or asking for your sign-in details, is not the service. The fee is paid through the official service. See what the register costs.

What we do not know yet

We cannot see how sign-in will work for companies or for people acting for a landlord. We will update this guide when GOV.UK publishes more.
